Obtaining a New Card

Getting a new social security card is extremely important after having a legal name change.  You must call the Social Security Administration and notify them of the updates.  Notifying the SSA should be the foremost priority and can help save time later.

Changing Your Last Name
Changing your last name requires an extensive legal and court process.  A notable exception is in the case of marriage, where you can take your spouses’s last name.

Children of divorced can also have their last name changed, but both partners must be notified and agree to the change.  This is done to ensure both sides have an opportunity to present their objection.  In some cases, the name change petition will have to be published in a local newspaper to receive full court approval.
